What The Ninth Heart Is About
Martin, a poor student, joins those setting out to find a cure for Princess Adriana, who has fallen to a strange illness. What nobody knows is that the princess is not ill but under a spell: the magician favoured at court is preparing an elixir of youth from the blood of nine men’s hearts, and has already gathered eight. Martin is about to be the ninth. The film pulls the fairy tale towards horror; the circus, the fair and the court are all built in the same dark key. Ondřej Pavelka appears in Juraj Herz’s eighty eight minute Czechoslovak film; it was completed in 1979.
