Abang Adik

Jin Ong's 2023 debut feature takes place in the Pudu district of Kuala Lumpur and follows two stateless brothers. Abang is deaf and mute, lives off day work in the market and has accepted his situation. His younger brother Adik has not; he knows that without papers no door will open and is willing to chase a forged identity. The film treats the legal position of people living undocumented in Malaysia not as background but as the direct source of the tension between them: one has chosen silence, the other anger. A violent event midway upsets that balance, and the last part of the film plays out in the gap between law and mercy. Wu Kang-ren was named best actor at the Golden Horse Awards. Who it's for: viewers who like social realist drama and Southeast Asian cinema. Who it's not for: anyone expecting a hopeful close; the film does not provide one.
