What About Love Is About
Three stories in three cities: Tokyo, Taipei and Shanghai. In the first two a Japanese person and a Taiwanese person meet; in the third a Japanese man and a Chinese woman. Some of the characters speak Japanese and some Mandarin, and every part touches what it is to be a foreigner: trying to get close to somebody in a city whose language you barely have. Zhang Yibai, Ten Shimoyama and Yee Chih-yen each directed a section. That it is a co-production between three countries matches its own subject exactly.
