What Absolutely Tame Is a Horse Is About
Over a single night in Tehran, a traffic policeman on a motorcycle tries to squeeze money out of everyone who crosses his path, counting everything from an untied shoelace to an accusation of adultery as grounds for a fine. He fastens on a man with no money and insists the sum be paid that same night, so the man has to knock on the door of everyone he knows and try every route he can think of. As the night goes on a strange circuit forms across the city, and at each stop another kind of helplessness comes to light. Abdolreza Kahani’s eighty eight minute Iranian film draws its humour from this absurd chase, but what it describes is how ordinary a system of bribes has become. Mehran Ahmadi and Reza Attaran appear; it was shown at Fajr on 1 February 2011, was kept from release in Iran and took a special jury award from the critics.
