What Across the River and into the Trees Is About
Venice after the war. Colonel Richard Cantwell, an American officer living with everything he brought back from the fighting, takes the news about his health with flat composure. He goes into the city to spend a weekend quietly and walks his old routes. The plan comes apart, and a young woman he meets by chance gives him something he was not expecting. It is adapted from Ernest Hemingway's 1950 novel, which was badly received on publication and is still counted among his most contested books. Paula Ortiz does not hurry the story and refuses to shoot Venice as a postcard. Liev Schreiber plays Cantwell with the exhaustion left in, and what the film is really about is how a person talks about dying.
