What Afghan Breakdown Is About
With the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan already under way, a company of worn-down paratroopers under Major Bandura takes in Steklov, the son of a senior officer. Bandura’s men stopped believing in the war long ago; what is left is carrying out orders, covering each other and getting home. Vladimir Bortko built the film after travelling to Kabul and Kandahar in 1988, and brought in Mikhail Leshchinsky, a reporter who had spent years in the country, to work on the script. As a Soviet-Italian co-production it gave the lead to Michele Placido, and shot in Tajikistan, whose landscape stood in for Afghanistan. Released in the Soviet Union’s final year, it refuses the heroic register earlier war films had relied on.
