What The Blonde Around the Corner Is About
An out-of-work astrophysicist takes a job hauling crates at a grocery store and falls for the sharp saleswoman on the produce counter. Her world is built out of the back doors of a shortage economy, favours and barter; his is built out of stars. Vladimir Bortko’s comedy plays on exactly that gap and makes fun of Soviet consumer culture. It was shot in 1982 and could not be released until 1984 because of the censors; scenes were cut and Andrey Mironov was made to record musical interludes that were not in the script. Even so it was seen by more than twenty-four million people that year.
