Ronna works at a supermarket in Los Angeles, cannot make rent, and tries to fix it with one night of drug dealing. The film tells the same night from three points of view, each section showing what was happening behind the others. Doug Liman directed from a script by John August. Comparisons to Pulp Fiction were unavoidable and August accepted them: by 1999 the structure had stopped being an experimental art-film move and become an accepted approach. Liman worked guerrilla style, carrying the camera on his shoulder and running between locations, often without permits. Sarah Polley, Katie Holmes and Timothy Olyphant are in the cast. On a 20 million dollar budget it grossed 28.5 million, below expectations. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 91 percent, with critics praising the sharp dialogue and raucous visuals. It became a cult film afterwards. Who it is for: viewers who like fast, music-driven crime comedy from the end of the nineties. Who it is not for: anyone wanting depth of character. The film moves twenty people through 103 minutes and stops on none of them.
