Road House

Road House (2024) is a remake of the 1989 film, and this time what gets saved is not a bar but a place in the Florida Keys. Dalton is a former UFC fighter making money in underground bouts, and nobody wants to fight him because they know who he is. A bar owner hires him to keep order. The bar sits in the middle of a land dispute. The film does not stay faithful to its original; the tone is lighter and the humour more open. Jake Gyllenhaal plays the character permanently calm and excessively polite, and the choice works. The fights were shot with real fighters. Conor McGregor appears in a film for the first time and is used as a wholly exaggerated character. Doug Liman directed, and that became the most discussed thing about it. Liman openly objected to the film going straight to streaming instead of cinemas and announced he would not attend its promotional screenings. The director protested his own premiere. A legal argument over the screenplay's copyright status also followed. Gyllenhaal went through serious physical preparation for the part. It stands alone for anyone who does not know the original. It runs 121 minutes. Good for: action, fight scenes, and light entertainment. Less good for: the story is thin, the villain is weakly written, and the violence is harsh.
