Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero (2022) begins with the return of the Red Ribbon Army. Goku and Vegeta are not at the centre this time; the story is handed to Gohan and Piccolo, and that choice was what people argued about most. Akira Toriyama wrote the story and designed the characters and the Red Ribbon vehicles himself. It was the fourth and final Dragon Ball film made under his supervision; Toriyama died in March 2024. It is the first feature in the series produced largely in CGI. Director Tetsuro Kodama had worked in the technique before and chose it deliberately to separate this film from its predecessors. The decision split the audience, some praising the fluidity of the movement, others saying the hand drawn feel was gone. The release date moved. It had been set for 22 April 2022 and was pushed to 11 June after Toei Animation was hit by ransomware. The company published the results of its investigation on 28 April 2022. It grossed roughly 97.2 to 102.5 million dollars worldwide, the second highest of any Dragon Ball film. It runs 100 minutes. Good for: followers of the series, fight animation, and Gohan and Piccolo. Less good for: the story is completely closed to newcomers. The CG style bothers anyone expecting hand drawn work, and the comic passages interrupt the rhythm of the fights.
