What Gintama: The Very Final Is About
Gintoki and his friends have lived for years in a world of uncertain shape: an Edo occupied by aliens, a former samurai with a wooden sword, and a shop set up to take odd jobs. In this film the joking stops. An account left by their teacher is to be settled, and something has to be stopped before the planet is destroyed. Old enemies stand on the same side, characters long unseen return, and the series tells its own ending. Chizuru Miyawaki directs. The film is adapted from the manga by Hideaki Sorachi and carries the story's finale to the screen. It is a Japanese production. The narrative rests on the last chapters of the series and is built as the continuation of the earlier films and the television run. The film found a wide audience in Japan and became the highest earning production of the series. The matter it treats is farewell; the film tells its own audience plainly that it is closing the series. Gintama's usual tone is kept; absurd jokes come in between heavy fights. The film contains passages mocking its own genre and the anime industry. The narrative tries to say goodbye to a great many characters and some are passed over quickly. The fights are drawn in more detail than in the television series. The ending gives the series a close. Its limit is context; the narrative is completely closed to anyone who does not know the series, and there are far too many characters. Who it is for: viewers of Gintama and followers of long anime series. Who it is not for: it is impenetrable from outside, uneven in tone, and the ending emotional.
