Black Butler: Book of the Atlantic

The young earl Ciel Phantomhive and his butler Sebastian board an ocean liner on the trail of a secret society said to be raising the dead. Aboard are a case for the Queen, a cult meeting and a hold full of corpses. Then the risen rise up and the ship begins to sink. The film is not interested in horror. It is interested in the contract: Sebastian is a demon serving Ciel on the terms that he will take the boy's soul once the revenge is complete. The most loyal character in the story is the one who will end him. The film reminds you in every scene. The form is anime adaptation: Victorian décor, fast fights, wide shipboard sequences. The visual language of the series is preserved. Noriyuki Abe directed, from the Luxury Liner arc of Yana Toboso's manga. The production is A-1 Pictures'. Daisuke Ono voices Sebastian and Maaya Sakamoto voices Ciel. Who it is for: people following the series and viewers who like Victorian fantasy. Who it is not for: anyone new to it. The film introduces no characters, its crowded cast arrives unexplained and a viewer without the manga is lost by the second half.
