Jujutsu Kaisen 0

Sunghoo Park’s film comes from four manga chapters by Gege Akutami, run in Jump Giga as Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School. The zero arrived only when they were collected in one volume, published in December 2018 beside the third volume of the main series. Hiroshi Seko said one volume could not fill two hours, so Okkotsu’s past and the bond between Gojo and Geto were expanded with new material. The closing Gojo and Miguel fight is not in the book, nor is the post credits scene, which Toho hesitated over until Akutami supplied the idea. Some animators were not used to the wide cinema frame. The 28 midnight screens planned in Japan for opening day sold out and became 58. The run ended after 157 days and 9.8 million tickets, the highest earning title at the Japanese box office from the 2021 calendar year. At the 45th Japan Academy Film Prize it was only a nominee for Animation of the Year, the award going to Evangelion 3.0+1.0; the 7th Crunchyroll Anime Awards gave it Best Film. A good fit if you accept a story that stays with Yuta and Rika and rations Gojo and Geto. Not for a reader wanting the four chapter book carried over line by line; the final fight and the closing scene were added.
