DAN DA DAN: Evil Eye

Momo and Okarun travel this time to a hot spring town. The reason is Jiji: Momo's childhood friend says strange things are happening at the house his family has moved into and asks for help. The house is old and there is a story long told in the town. The three move in. Before long it is clear the presence there is no ordinary ghost; it is bound to something done in the town's past and it concerns Jiji himself. Abel Gongora directs. It was made at the Science SARU studio. The film is in fact the first episodes of the series' second season joined for cinema; it was shown in cinemas in Japan and elsewhere. The source is Yukinobu Tatsu's comic and the series gained a wide audience quickly. The mixture of genres it builds is plain: horror, comedy and youth drama stand in the same scene. The animation is the most praised side of the series; the movement design and use of colour carry the studio's manner. The story in this part is among the darkest strands of the series and the humour cuts out entirely at times. Its limit is independence; for anyone who has not seen the series the characters and earlier events are missing. Who it is for: people following the series and viewers who like Japanese animation. Who it is not for: it is not an entry point, the shifts of register are abrupt, and some scenes are uncomfortable.
