Superbad

A comedy set on the last days of school. Seth and Evan have been friends since childhood. Graduation is a few weeks away and they are going to different universities; neither of them talks about it. They are invited to a party. In exchange they have to bring alcohol, and none of them is old enough. Fogell gets a fake identity card. It has a single name on it, and that name is McLovin. There is a robbery at the shop and Fogell is left with the police. From there the film splits into three lines. The two friends try to find drink; Fogell drives around the city with two policemen, and the night gets steadily more absurd. What the narrative is interested in is not the party but separation: underneath it is two friends knowing they will lose each other, and the last scene says so plainly. The police line is the loosest but most original part. Two adults behave like children and the film never takes them seriously. The dialogue is crude and fast. The script rests on a text the writers started in their own school years, and the two main characters carry their names. The title design is a reference to the comedies of the 1970s and is the film's best closing. The narrative is weak on its women characters, which was often noted after release. Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Bill Hader and Seth Rogen are in the cast. Greg Mottola directed. Who it is for: anyone who likes crude school comedy that still has feeling. Who it is not for: anyone who cannot carry some of the humour now; several jokes plainly show their age.
