Band Baaja Baaraat

This was Maneesh Sharma's first film and Ranveer Singh's entry into cinema. Shruti, played by Anushka Sharma, has mapped out wedding planning as an actual career and works with discipline; Bittoo, played by Singh, is a Delhi boy with no plan at all. They start a company called Shaadi Mubarak with a single rule: business and feelings stay separate. The film's business is breaking that rule, but it does not do it along the usual Bollywood route. When the relationship goes wrong, rather than sweetening it the film shows how unbearable it is for two partners to keep working together. The details of Delhi's wedding industry are treated as a trade rather than as decor. It was made for fifteen crore and took ninety-six. Singh won Best Male Debut at the Filmfare awards in 2011, and the two leads were paired again in later years. Who it is for: viewers who enjoy Bollywood romantic comedy and want characters who genuinely work for a living. Who it is not for: anyone unaccustomed to a running time near three hours and to song sequences between scenes.
