What Afghan Star Is About
A television talent contest pulls the whole of Afghanistan to the screen: people vote by mobile phone, argue about the winner in the street, and some read the whole thing as a sign of opening. But the price of walking onto that stage is not the same for everyone. When Setara, one of the contestants, dances freely and without a headscarf in her farewell performance, the threats begin and the argument goes far beyond the programme. Havana Marking’s documentary shows how music becomes a field of politics. It won best director and the audience award at Sundance.
