What The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years Is About
The documentary was shot in Los Angeles around the Sunset Strip in 1987 and 1988. On one side are the survivors, Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper, Lemmy; on the other, hundreds of young bands playing the clubs without a deal. Penelope Spheeris puts the two side by side and the difference shows itself: the young men speak with absolute certainty that they will be famous, and what they say stops being funny and becomes frightening. Chris Holmes's interview, drinking in a swimming pool in front of his mother, is among the most cited scenes in the history of music documentary. The film neither sanctifies nor mocks; it records. The first film in the series covers the punk scene and the third street kids. Who it is for: viewers who like the history of metal and music documentary. Who it is not for: anyone troubled by extreme drinking and misogynist talk reproduced uncensored.
