What After Stonewall Is About
The documentary tells the history of gay and lesbian life from the Stonewall riots of 1969 up to the time the film was made. It takes up what was lost as well as what was won, how the organising was built, and the divisions inside the community. The account is not a celebratory text; it shows that progress was no straight line and that every step came with a struggle of its own. It was made as the continuation of an earlier documentary. The account does not present the people who speak as a single community either; what counts as a gain changes from person to person. Melissa Etheridge narrated John Scagliotti’s eighty eight minute American documentary, completed in 1999.
