What The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson Is About
Marsha P. Johnson called herself a street queen, and the P in the middle came from what she said when anyone asked: pay it no mind. From Stonewall onward she was one of the most visible faces of the movement, and with Sylvia Rivera she founded S.T.A.R. for trans people. Her body was found in the Hudson in 1992, the police called it suicide, and her friends never accepted it. The documentary is built like a murder investigation, with the activist Victoria Cruz reopening the file. The NYPD reviewed the death in 2012 and changed the cause to undetermined. A serious objection about the sourcing of the research has followed the director.
