What After the Rain, on Thursday Is About
A palace steward conspires with bandits to take the tsar’s newborn son and leave his own child in the cradle. Twenty years on, the true prince and the boy raised beside him are slaves in a quarry while the steward’s son lives as a prince. The brothers escape, and dealing with an immortal sorcerer falls to them. Made by Mikhail Yuzovsky for the Gorky Studio, the film uses the whole vocabulary of Russian folk tale: Koschei, the firebird, the hidden place where a death is kept. It is a children’s film, with Oleg Tabakov, Tatyana Peltser and Semyon Farada among the cast. It belongs to one of the more productive veins of Soviet children’s cinema, the one that took the folk tale seriously and did not condescend to its audience.
