What My Neighbor Totoro Is About
Hayao Miyazaki’s 1988 Japanese animation follows two sisters who move to the countryside with their father while their mother is in hospital. The detail comes from the director’s own childhood: his mother was bedridden with spinal tuberculosis from 1947 until 1955. Every ounce of tension comes from that one unseen room. There is no villain, no countdown, and the creatures in the forest are never once framed as a danger. Across 86 minutes the only genuine incident is a child going missing near the end, and it lands harder than expected precisely because nothing before it has put anyone at risk. The pacing is unbalanced on purpose. The creatures turn up rarely, the film cuts away from most of those meetings without explanation, and only the bus stop sequence runs long. Its history explains its standing. On 16 April 1988 it was judged too risky to release alone and screened alongside Grave of the Fireflies; it did not recover its costs in cinemas, and the shelf rather than the auditorium built its reputation. Licensed Totoro goods reached 10.97 billion yen in 1999 and the character became the studio emblem. Worth it if a narrative fed by an unseen illness, with creatures left unexplained, sounds right. Avoid it if you want a threat or deadline to pull the story along.
