What Howl's Moving Castle Is About

Mamoru Hosoda was attached to direct first and left after Ghibli rejected his ideas; the project restarted under Miyazaki in February 2003. The war in the film does not come from the novel either, it comes from Miyazaki, who spoke of his rage at the invasion of Iraq and said he had made a film he expected to be received badly in the United States. That is why the fighting begins without a stated cause and ends by announcement, and why the last twenty minutes feel like a different picture. The sharpest difference from the source sits exactly where audiences get lost. In Diana Wynne Jones’ 1986 novel, Howl is really a Welshman called Howell Jenkins and one chapter takes place in modern Wales, and Sophie’s power is named outright: she talks life into objects. The film removes both. If Howl’s evasiveness seems arbitrary and Sophie’s usefulness unexplained, that is a deleted layer rather than your inattention. One quiet choice pays off throughout: Chieko Baisho voices Sophie at eighteen and at ninety, so a single performer carries every switch between them. Venice gave the film its Osella award for technical achievement. Not for: viewers who need plot closure, since the war ends across the hundred and nineteen minutes without cause or consequence.
