What One Piece: Stampede Is About
Pirates from across the world are invited to a festival, with a long-sought piece of treasure as the prize. There is another calculation behind the invitation. The film plays for the reunion rather than the story: names that never shared a scene across twenty years of the series are gathered on one island. The narrative therefore moves in blocks, each giving a different character a moment. It was made to mark the series' twentieth year and became one of the most watched animated films of its year in Japan. Who it's for: viewers who follow the series and know the cast. Who it's not for: anyone starting One Piece here; the film introduces no one and goes straight to the celebration.
