Hunter x Hunter: Phantom Rouge

Kurapika's eyes are stolen and the trail leads to someone wearing the likeness of Pairo, his childhood friend. Gon and Killua have to protect him while finding whoever is operating the puppets. The story slots into the series between the Yorknew City and Greed Island arcs. What it is worth to the series is Kurapika's past. The massacre of his clan and his bond with Pairo, a blind child, form the emotional centre, and for viewers who care about that side of the show it delivers. Madhouse produced it, and it opened at number one in Japan on 12 January 2013. The manga's creator Yoshihiro Togashi drew a two part short called Kurapika Tsuioku-hen as a prequel, distributed as a volume zero to the first million ticket holders. Its flaw is that it stands outside the main story, so nothing here permanently affects anything in the series, and the villain is thin. Who it is for: followers of the series who love the Kurapika material. Who it is not for: anyone using this as an entry point.
