My Hero Academia: You're Next

Society has begun to collapse; the heroes are scattered and order does not hold. Into this comes Dark Might: a man who has taken on the appearance and the rhetoric of a dead hero and declared himself a saviour. He builds his own fortress and hangs it above the city. Deku and his friends go in. The subject is not heroism but a symbol being imitable. Dark Might's power comes entirely from how he looks; people believe him because he resembles a hero, and the film says so outright. The form is the familiar template of the series films: a new enemy, an event that does not touch the canon, and large-scale fight sequences. The action inside the fortress is its most ambitious element. It is the fourth theatrical film in the series and coincides with the seventh season of the show. The narrative does not advance the main story; it is built as a side chapter and its place in the series is left unspecified. New characters appear who do not return afterwards. Tensai Okamura directs. Daiki Yamashita voices Deku. Who it is for: viewers following the series who like large-scale fight sequences. Who it is not for: anyone expecting the story to move; the film adds nothing to the main narrative.
