The film is in two parts. The first is a seventy-minute re-edit of the television series, organised around four characters rather than chronologically. The second consists of newly animated material and is the beginning of the answer to the series' contested ending. And it stops there. The second part breaks off, and its continuation was released as a separate film the same year. Hideaki Anno directed. It is a Gainax production. A real warning: this film does not tell a story on its own. Without the closing episodes of the series it is unreadable, and with them it still cuts off midway. It has to be watched together with the film that follows.
