What Gurren Lagann The Movie: Childhood's End Is About

Simon lives in a village underground. His work is digging; he opens tunnels so the village can expand. He does not know there is such a place as above. One day while digging he finds something strange: a small machine with a face. That same day the ceiling splits, an enormous robot falls from above, and then a girl with a gun arrives. Simon and his friend Kamina come up to the surface. Up there is sky, and machines that hunt people. The two start fighting with the machine he found, and an army forms. Hiroyuki Imaishi directs. Tetsuya Kakihara and Katsuyuki Konishi are among the voices. The studio is Gainax. The film is a compilation of the first half of the television series; some sections were redrawn and the finale differs from the series. Its style is built on excess; the sizes of the robots and the scale of the fights go outside logic on purpose. The most discussed event of the series stands here too and turns the direction of the narrative. The style of animation is uneven, and this is a choice rather than a fault; the quality of drawing shifts from scene to scene deliberately. Its limit is form; being a compilation the rhythm is compressed and the development from the series passes in accelerated shape. Another limit is entry; for someone who does not know the series the number of characters and the speed of events are too much. Who it is for: viewers who like robot animation and the work of Gainax. Who it is not for: the compilation shape is compressed, the register overblown, and for anyone who watched the series it repeats.
