What comes out is neither a straight nostalgia piece nor a modern superhero film but something stranger, deliberately old fashioned in texture. Much of the fighting is staged on real locations in real suits, and the camera keeps cutting to hard, comic panel angles. Anno's real subject is the price of transformation and how much of a person has to be given up to make a hero. Viewers with no grounding in tokusatsu may find the rhythm odd, because the film assumes rather than explains.
