Alita: Battle Angel

Robert Rodriguez directed this only because he inherited a project James Cameron had carried for nearly two decades. Cameron met Yukito Kishiro’s manga Gunnm around 2000 through Guillermo del Toro and wrote a screenplay of a hundred and eighty-six pages. Rodriguez cut it to a hundred and twenty for nothing, telling Cameron the thing was too long, that he would trim it free of charge, and that another director could have the result. Cameron handed over the chair instead. Shooting finished in fifty-seven days at Troublemaker studios in Austin rather than Budapest. Every argument about the film gathers around one design decision: the enlarged eyes. That is not a glitch but the single deliberate break from photorealism in a production otherwise chasing it. Weta spent roughly eight and a half million polygons on each eye, where a whole character model in Avatar ran to one and a half million. Alita therefore looks drawn while standing beside photographed actors, and whether you read that as design or error settles the picture. The Motorball section fills a long middle block and pauses the story. The real antagonist never enters the arena. Right for a viewer willing to accept an open finish written toward a sequel. Worth knowing too that audiences outside North America supplied over three quarters of the gross.
