What After This Our Exile Is About
When the mother leaves home, the son stays with his father. The father is addicted to gambling and turns to violence; the boy starts stealing in order to keep him. Patrick Tam chooses neither pity nor accusation; he watches at length as a child is made to carry the worst version of the man he loves, and that watching runs a hundred and sixty minutes. The director returned with this film after a long absence. It is set in Malaysia. Aaron Kwok plays the father and won best actor at the Golden Horse awards for it, his second in a row, while Gouw Ian Iskandar took best supporting actor. The film was named best film at both the Hong Kong Film Awards and the Golden Horse awards, and Tam also won best director.
