What Al Capone Is About
A small-time hood named Al Capone arrives in Chicago as Prohibition begins and goes to work as bodyguard to the racketeer Johnny Torrio. His rise proceeds through murder, extortion and bought politicians, until he is running the largest business in the city. The fall comes at the same speed, and the ending is not a grand one. Richard Wilson directs, with Rod Steiger as Capone and Martin Balsam and Nehemiah Persoff in support. The film declines to glorify the gangster legend and keeps the coarseness and the temper in front. Steiger's rages are the part people remember.
