What Alone With Her Dreams Is About
The end of the 1960s, on the Sicilian island of Favignana. Lucia is ten, and when her parents emigrate to France to find work they leave her with her grandmother Maria. Maria is rigid and distant and does not know how to show what she feels; her own life made her that way. Lucia misses her family and tries at the same time to find her place in a small, traditional island community. Paolo Licata's 2019 film comes from Catena Fiorello's novel; he wrote the screenplay with the author and it took the screenplay prize at Taormina. It tells the story of what emigration leaves behind from the child's side. The real story is the silence between the two women slowly closing.
