At War for Love

A Sicilian waiter working in New York in 1943 needs her father's consent to marry the woman he loves. The only way to reach Sicily is to enlist in the American army. The film uses comedy to look at a hard piece of history: during the Allied landings, the American administration appointed men with mafia connections as mayors on the grounds of removing fascists. The narrative delivers this through the hero, as something he witnesses without understanding. Pif wrote, directed and starred; he came from Italian television programmes that treat the mafia with humour. Before watching: the historical claim rests on real documents and is still argued over in Italy. The film offers it as an argument, not as proof.
