What Tea with Mussolini Is About
Florence in the thirties. When Luca's mother dies, his father hands him over to a circle of Englishwomen who call themselves the Scorpioni, take tea on the hour and respect nothing except art. The boy grows up among them. Then Italy enters the war, and the status they assumed made them untouchable evaporates overnight; they are gathered up and confined to a small town. Zeffirelli drew the story from his own childhood. Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Joan Plowright, Cher and Lily Tomlin are all in it, and watching them is the film.
