What Amar Prem Is About
Abandoned by her husband, the village woman Pushpa ends up in a brothel in Kolkata, where she forms two attachments: with Anand Babu, a wealthy man who comes to hear her sing, and with Nandu, a small boy badly treated in the neighbourhood. None of these bonds has a name, yet the three of them hold on to one another more tightly than to any family. Shakti Samanta’s hundred and forty three minute film was adapted from a Bengali story by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay. Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore lead, with Vinod Mehra and Madan Puri in support. Rahul Dev Burman composed the score, and the songs Chingari Koi Bhadke and Kuchh To Log Kahenge, sung by Kishore Kumar, have outlasted the film itself.
