What Amarkalam Is About
Vasu, a street tough who lives in a cinema hall, clashes one day with Mohana, a music student, while carrying reels of film. Mohana is the daughter of the police commissioner, and a former gang leader just out of prison holds an old grudge against him. The man tells Vasu to abduct the girl for two days, meaning to humiliate the family. From there the film builds a love story; this is a choice of narrative that makes the abduction acceptable and reads uneasily today. In the end the grudge turns out to have had no basis, but by then matters have gone too far. Ajith Kumar and Shalini appear in Saran’s hundred and fifty seven minute Indian film, completed in 1999.
