What American Grindhouse Is About
American exploitation cinema existed at the edge of the mainstream through the twentieth century: morality films of the silent era, the drug-warning pictures of the 1940s, the nudist-camp films of the 1950s, the gore of the 1960s, the blaxploitation and women-in-prison films of the 1970s. This documentary tells that history in order and shows the same mechanism working in every period: selling what is forbidden in the guise of education. Elijah Drenner's film rests on speakers from inside the industry: Fred Olen Ray, Allison Anders, John Landis and producers of the period tell it. Robert Forster narrates. The film neither defends nor condemns exploitation cinema; instead it shows how much of it mainstream Hollywood later took. Who it's for: Anyone interested in film history, genre cinema, and American independent production. Who it's not for: The clips shown contain direct violence and sex. The narrative is also fast and shallow, with only a few minutes per period.
