Werner Herzog is shooting Fitzcarraldo in the Peruvian jungle, and one thing sits at the centre of the plan: pull a real steamship over a hill into the next river, without models. Les Blank stayed there through the shoot and recorded a disaster spread across four years: the first cast fell apart, the lead actor fell ill and left, a border conflict broke out, the ship sank and the engineer walked off the job. The most cited passage is Herzog's interview in the middle of the forest, where he speaks not of nature's harmony but of discord and misery. The film does not exalt him; where the indigenous workers stand in this production is left as an open question. Who it is for: anyone curious about how films get made and about Herzog. Who it is not for: viewers who will find the production's relationship with indigenous people disturbing.
