What A Poem Is a Naked Person Is About
Les Blank's 1974 documentary was shot over three years at the musician Leon Russell's studio in Oklahoma. The footage takes in concerts, breaks between sessions and the people around. The documentary does not settle for describing Russell. Blank turns the camera outside the studio too; everyday life in the area, buildings being demolished and chance encounters all enter, and the narrative keeps wandering off. George Jones and Willie Nelson appear. Though finished, the film could not be shown for many years and only reached circulation decades later. Who it's for: those who like music documentary and loose-form cinema. Who it's not for: viewers expecting an orderly portrait of an artist; the documentary proceeds scattered.
