What Woodstock Is About
A record of the festival held on a farm in upstate New York in the summer of 1969, though the film is not content to simply cover the stage. The camera is as interested in mud, food queues and the man announcing rain warnings over the speakers as it is in the music. The split screen is method rather than decoration: you watch the performer and the crowd at once, and the distance between them becomes the real subject. At over three hours it is genuinely tiring, but a trimmed Woodstock would not be Woodstock, because the event was an endurance test before it was a concert.
