Wick Is Pain

The documentary tells how the John Wick series came about. At the start nobody was interested: the script went from hand to hand, the money could not be found, and the man who would sit in the director's chair had never directed a film. Chad Stahelski was a stunt coordinator. Keanu Reeves attaches himself to the project and the two build a method of their own: the fights are filmed and rehearsed in advance, the actor does his own moves, and the camera does not cut. The film comes out and works. Three sequels follow. The documentary also tells what it cost: injuries, exhaustion and ten years. Jeffrey Doe directs. Keanu Reeves, Chad Stahelski and the producer Basil Iwanyk appear. Lionsgate distributed it. Its material consists of previously unpublished footage shot on and off set across ten years. It premiered at Beyond Fest on 8 May 2025 and went to digital platforms the next day; it runs a hundred and twenty six minutes. The matter it treats is physical cost; the phrase in the title comes from something Reeves said on set. The documentary shows how the stunt team works in detail and describes how the fight rehearsals are prepared. It also tells the commercial rise of the series and does not hide the dealings with the studio. Its limit is distance; being the production team's own account, the critical view is weak and it approaches the register of promotion. Who it is for: viewers of the series and anyone curious about the technical side of action cinema. Who it is not for: it is closed to anyone unfamiliar with the films, runs long, and its viewpoint is partisan.
