What Amerika Square Is About
Billy, a tattoo artist, and Nakos, who is out of work, are old friends in Athens who spend most of their time in the square that gives the film its title. Nakos is angry about the number of immigrants arriving and puts that anger in openly racist terms, while Billy is on the side of the newcomers, and the two are pulled together by Tarek, a Syrian refugee. Around the square the film sketches a whole migration economy in which a former Syrian military doctor, an African singer and a people smuggler each meet the same crisis from completely different positions. Yannis Sakaridis loosely adapted his second feature from a novel by Yannis Tsirbas; it premiered in Busan and was submitted as Greece’s entry for the foreign language Oscar.
