What An Ordinary Execution Is About
Moscow, autumn 1952. Anna, a young doctor, works in a hospital and tries to stay unnoticed; after years of purges the denunciation could come from a neighbour or a colleague at any moment. When word of her healing hands gets around she is taken away one night, not to the Lubyanka but to the Kremlin, to attend the ailing Stalin. Marc Dugain adapted it from his own 2007 novel; it was his first feature. André Dussollier plays Stalin and Marina Hands plays Anna. The encounter itself is invented; what is historical is the period, the one in which doctors were being purged. The tension comes not from event but from two people being in the same room.
