What Ancika Is About

Benni Setiawan's 2024 Indonesian film is an entry in the series adapted from Pidi Baiq's novels and is set in Bandung in 1995. Dilan, former leader of a motorcycle crew, tries to impress Ancika, a secondary school student who reads and has ideas of her own; she rejects that kind of attention from the start. The series has a wide readership in Indonesia and the films rest on that attachment. What distinguishes this entry is giving the woman character more say and bending the romantic template a little. The period work is careful; Bandung in the nineties is built in detail. The pace is slow, and for a viewer new to the series the characters' histories stay closed. Who it's for: viewers who like Indonesian films about young people and follow the Dilan series. Who it's not for: anyone new to the series, or wanting plot.
