What And When Did You Last See Your Father? Is About
Sitting with his dying father, Blake Morrison keeps going back to his childhood. The man he remembers was loud and certain of himself, a country doctor who talked to everyone and bent whatever rules were in his way, and who was always too much for his son. Now cancer is taking him, and the one sentence Blake wants has still not arrived. Anand Tucker adapted Morrison's 1993 memoir of the same name, a title borrowed from a well-known Victorian painting. Jim Broadbent plays the father, Colin Firth the son, Juliet Stevenson the mother. What separates it from others of its kind is that it refuses to make the reconciliation easy.
