What Animal Crackers Is About
A painting is stolen at a party in a wealthy woman's mansion, where everything has already come apart thanks to the Marx Brothers. The plot is a pretext; the film strings together the routines of a troupe newly arrived from the stage. Groucho's wordplay is still fast and Harpo's silent destruction is still strange. The camera is often locked off and shoots it like a proscenium, which is the constraint of early sound. The rhythm can drag for a modern audience, though the good sections have not aged in eighty years.
