Annayum Rasoolum

Rajeev Ravi's 2013 Malayalam film is set in Kochi. Rasool, a taxi driver, sees Anna, who works in a shop, from a distance every day, and for a long stretch the relationship proceeds through looks and brief encounters. They come from different religions, and under pressure from families and neighbours that difference hardens into a concrete obstacle. The film tells its love story through daily detail rather than grand gesture: the harbour, buses, narrow streets, the end of a shift. Ravi, known as a cinematographer, keeps the camera at documentary distance and makes the city the equal of its characters. Fahadh Faasil's quiet, closed Rasool is among his most cited roles. The ending does not go where the romantic form promises. Who it's for: viewers who like realistic Indian romantic drama and the new wave in Malayalam cinema. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a fast-moving story and a happy ending.
