What Anne Frank's Diary Is About
During the Second World War, in the Netherlands under Nazi occupation, Anne Frank, the daughter of a Jewish family, and her family are forced into hiding. In the back part of a building, behind a concealed door, they live for years without being seen by anyone. Throughout that time Anne keeps a diary; what she writes holds both the small matters of daily life and the thinking of a young person growing up. The film tells that diary as animation and keeps the events within the child’s view. The account does not drown what is hard to show in detail; it gives its weight to the hiding itself. Akinori Nagaoka’s hundred and two minute Japanese animated film was completed in 1995.
