Another Child

Two girls in their final year of school learn something before they get around to hating each other: one's father is having an affair with the other's mother, and the woman is pregnant. The man disappears; what is left is two mothers, two daughters and a baby on the way. The film builds the reckoning not around the man but around the four women who have to carry it, and it lets nobody off easily. The director is Kim Yun-seok, a well-known Korean actor; this is his first film behind the camera and he also turns up in a small part. He tries to tell the collapse of a family through dry humour without sliding into melodrama. The best stretches are the silent scenes between the two young performers, Kim Hye-jun and Park Se-jin. That the children end up carrying what the adults cannot resolve is the idea the Korean title points to.
